Marine Life Oceanarium was always a highly-underrated marine attraction . . . it was the jewel of the Gulf Coast! From it's humble beginnings in 1956 it evolved into a major supplier of dolphins for other marine life and amusement parks. Vintage postcards show that it was built in phases beginning with one tank which later became known as the reef Tank. The large circular main tank and the grandstand tank came later. You've heard the saying 'Lightning strikes twice' well in the case of Marine Life it was hurricanes. In 1969 Hurricane Camille damaged Marine Life and the dolphins swam out of the tanks due to the storm surge. But the oceanarium was re-opened. They tore out the outer walls surrounding the tanks giving it an open-air look and constructed the Aquadome over the entire complex so guests could enjoy the shows in all weather conditions. Unfortunately it could not recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
